It’s not just about the money. It’s about growing as a researcher and bringing new ideas back to Nigeria. The program picks really promising students who are already working on their PhDs. It’s a way to make sure that the best minds have the resources they need to succeed.

A Background

To get this scholarship, you need to be a Nigerian citizen or resident and be studying for a PhD. You should have done a big part of your studies in Nigeria and have your university’s support. The program is looking for students who are great at what they do and are ready to take on the challenge of studying in the U.S.

The fields of study include things like science, engineering, arts, and more. But remember, it’s a tough competition, especially in journalism, communication, and business. So, you’ve got to be really good at what you do and ready to show it. The deadline to apply is June 1, so don’t wait too long.

What the Scholarship Offers

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program For Nigerian Students offers a funded opportunity for prospective applicants as follows:

  • The award pays for the recipient’s round-trip travel to the United States, as well as an annuity for each month, housing allowance, books and supplies, and computer expenses. Along with normal university health insurance, the Fulbright ASPE health benefit is also covered by the grant as supplementary coverage.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the opportunity, applicants have to meet certain requirements as listed below:

  • Candidates must be Nigerian citizens, nationals, or permanent residents with a valid passport issued by the Nigerian government.
  • Candidates must be PHD or doctorate students who have completed a substantial portion of their doctorate program at a Nigerian university and possess the institutional endorsement.
  • Note: Applicants with a master’s degree or a first degree are not eligible to apply for this program.
  • A strong academic background and a good level of English fluency are requirements for applicants.
  • By May 2023, applicants must have completed their first TOEFL exam
  • The minimum needed score on the applicable standardized exams (90 on the TOEFL) must be met by applicants.
  • Candidates must be highly motivated and truly committed to finishing the program on time and going back home.
  • The candidates who submit compelling proposals that clearly define their goals, methods, schedule, and rationale for carrying out the study in the United States will be invited to the shortlist for interviews.
  • Applicants who have not attended school in the United States will be given preference.
  • Because of the strong demand for full-time programs and tuition concerns, most U.S. colleges rarely admit research students in the disciplines of business, law, and accounting. Consequently, unless their applications are focused on economics, development-related fields, democracy, human rights, and conflict resolution, we will have a difficult time placing such grantees.
