Nuffield Drought Resilience Scholarships, Australia 2024-25

The 2024 Nuffield Drought Resilience Scholars are a group of farmers who received scholarships. They’re working on important topics related to drought. For example: Caitlin Herbert is studying cattle feedlots and how they can help during droughts, Michael Taylor is looking at ways to encourage more farmers to use agroforestry. Claudia Benn is figuring out how to make farming practices better for the environment, Ben Poschelk is researching how communities around the world deal with tough weather conditions, Natalie Schlitz is investigating problems with Australia’s fodder export sector when water is scarce.

These scholars are not just researchers; they are change-makers. Their efforts contribute to a more resilient agricultural sector, ensuring that Australian farmers can thrive despite the unpredictable nature of droughts. By addressing practical challenges head-on, they exemplify the spirit of innovation and resilience that defines the Nuffield Drought Resilience Scholarships program.

A Background

Over the next two years, Nuffield Australia will provide $1.6 million to the Future Drought Fund (FDF) for training and scholarships. Farmers will benefit from the drought resilience scholarships by learning new techniques and equipment for a changing environment.

International leaders in the field will provide knowledge to scholars studying drought resilience subjects while they are abroad. There will be up to ten scholarships given out for drought resistance. The total amount of each scholarship is $40,000. With the help of the FDF’s contribution, all 2024 and 2025 Nuffield scholars will get assistance in expanding their understanding of drought resilience.

What the Scholarship Offers

The Nuffield Drought Resilience Scholarships offers a funded opportunity for prospective applicants as follows:

• Successful candidates will receive a $40,000 grant, allowing them to study abroad and conduct research on drought resilience-related themes. Scholars will also get the chance to gain knowledge and expertise in drought management and agricultural resilience building from global leaders in the area.

Eligibility Criteria

Please note that eligibility varies across each of the available fellowships and as such, eligibility for every fellowship would be stated. To be eligible for the opportunity, applicants have to meet certain requirements as listed below:

• Acceptable Course(s): Any course that the host institutions give that addresses agricultural sustainability and drought resistance
• Acceptable Standards: Candidates need to:
  • either as experts in the food and fiber sectors or as farmers.
  • be in the age range of 28 to 45.
  • In their specialized domains, exhibit a dedication to improving drought resistance and climate change adaptation.
