What the Scholarship Offers

The Next Emerging Global Leader Scholar Award offers a funded opportunity for prospective applicants as follows:

  • The Next Emerging Global Leader Scholar Award (NEGLSA) scholarship pays for all billable costs (tuition, housing, and board) for one overseas student who wishes to study in the US but requires a non-immigrant visa (ideally an F-1 or J-1 student visa). Non-billable costs like required health insurance, books, airfare, taxes, and other incidentals (about US$4,000 a year) are not covered by the scholarship.
  • For a total of four years of undergraduate study, the Next Emerging Global Leader Scholar Award is renewable, provided that the recipient maintains an acceptable academic standing. Students may apply if they are interested in any of the AU majors.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the opportunity, applicants have to meet certain requirements as listed below:

  • Students from varied and underrepresented cultural and socioeconomic origins, as well as international students who have surmounted various difficulties and challenges, are welcome.
  • A minimum GPA equivalent of 3.8 out of 4.0 for grades 9 through 12 (or in the top 10% of the graduating class).
  • A proven dedication to community service, leadership, voluntarism, and improving the needs of the populace in their own nation.
  • Pupils who possess one of the following:
  • 95+ TOEFL iBT (with a minimum of 20 subscores required)
  • subscores on the paper-based TOEFL (obtained after May 31, 2017) of 24 or higher
  • IELTS 7.0+ (every subscore needs to be 6.0 or above)
  • minimum SAT score of 33 Minimum ACT reading subscore of 29 Minimum of 65 English PTE 125+ Duolingo (every subscore needs to be at least 115)
  • A minimum score of 185 in English on the Cambridge Assessment. Every subscore needs to be at least 169.
  • Students who will graduate by June 2024 from secondary or high school while still enrolled.
  • Crucial: Pupils enrolled in the IB program must aim to complete three HL subjects and receive a full IB certificate upon graduation. Before August 2024, students enrolled in the British A-Level program must finish 13 years of education and at least three A levels.

Application Procedure

Follow the process below on how to apply for the Next Emerging Global Leader Scholar Award for the 2024-25 academic session: 

  • Fill out the application on the Future Eagle Portal.
  • Get a bank letter showing you have at least $4,000. Upload it on the portal or fax it to +1-202-885-1025. You can for examples of bank teller here
  • Send your English test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, PTE, or Cambridge) to American University by December 15, 2023. The test center has to send them, not you.
  • Submit the Common or Coalition Application with all the needed documents by December 15, 2023, or January 15, 2024, at the latest. Remember to include the bank letter for $4,000.
  • If you’re with EducationUSA or a past FLEX or YES scholar, get a letter from your adviser. Send it to levinson@american.edu as a PDF.
  • If you’re not a finalist, you can still try for admission and some scholarships. But you’ll need to show you have $78,296 for the first year’s costs.
  • Remember, if you miss the deadlines or don’t send all the documents, your application won’t be considered. Good luck!.
