KILLAM Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at British Columbia University, Canada 2024-25 

International students are eligible to apply for the 2024–2025 KILLAM Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. Along with many other privileges, the scholarship includes a $60,000 yearly stipend for a maximum of two years, as well as a $4,000 travel research allowance over two years.

The Killam Scholarship was established in honor of Izaak Walton Killam by gifts made during her lifetime and via the Will of his widow, Dorothy Johnston Killam. Their main goal is to provide funding for research and advanced education at five Canadian institutions as well as the Canada Council for the Arts.

A Background

The Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies awards the UBC Killam Postdoctoral Research Fellowships each year, which are available to scholars in various fields of study. The fellowship recipients were to: “Be inclined to encourage the development of learning or gain distinction in the industry,” according to Mrs. Killam’s wishes.

The fellowship funding aid, which has served over 5000 scholars across the globe, caters to high-flying students who have excelled across major facets of their lives, including but not limited to social work and volunteering activities.

What the Scholarship Offers

The KILLAM Postdoctoral Research Fellowship offers a funded opportunity for prospective applicants as follows:

  • a $60,000 allowance every year for a maximum of two years
  • a two-year, $4,000 travel research stipend.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the opportunity, applicants have to meet certain requirements as listed below:

  • Previous Study Restrictions: Applicants must not have pursued PhD-level studies at any campus of the University of British Columbia, ensuring fairness and equal opportunity for all candidates.
  • Fresh Graduates: To qualify, candidates must have completed all requirements of their PhD no more than 24 months before the anticipated fellowship start date, emphasizing the program’s focus on supporting recent graduates in their academic pursuits.
  • Exclusion of Tenure-Track Faculty: This funding offer is designed to support early-career scholars in their postdoctoral research journey, thus individuals currently holding tenure-track or continuing faculty positions at universities or colleges are ineligible to apply.
  • Inclusivity for Temporary Faculty: Applicants with temporary, term, or non-tenure track faculty appointments are eligible to apply, highlighting the program’s commitment to inclusivity and support for scholars at various stages of their academic careers.

NOTE: Only postdoctoral applicants are eligible.

Application Procedure

Follow the process below on how to apply for the KILLAM Postdoctoral Research Fellowship for the 2024-25 academic session: 

  • Create a duplicate of your original academic transcripts or get one.
  • Forward these to your home university, and request that they: confirm that the copies match their records
  • verify the accuracy of the copies and affix the official university stamp to them.
  • Place the stamped and attested copies in sealed envelopes that have the Registrar’s endorsement.
