A Background

Annually, Dalhousie University awards Killam Predoctoral Scholarships on a competitive basis to high-flying graduate students in thesis-based programs (Master’s or Doctoral level) across major courses in the sciences, engineering, humanities, and social sciences. Successful applicants are selected through the Harmonized Scholarship Process, which is dependent on departmental support alongside academic results up to the university level. This process constitutes the functional review process.

Master’s students may hold a Level 1 Killam Scholarship for up to 24 months (but not past the end of the second year of your program).  

What the Scholarship Offers

Successful applicants for the Killam Masters-Level Awards get to receive $42,000/year, plus a $2,500/term international tuition fee supplement if applicable. 

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this funding opportunity, applicants have to meet certain requirements as listed below:

  • Awards are available to both Canadian and international students.
  • Because candidates must be eligible to receive scholarship assistance for at least two years, only master’s students who have not yet begun their degree may apply.
  • You must also apply for financing from appropriate provincial, national, and/or international agencies, such as NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR, NSHRF, and others.
  • Priority Research Areas: In your application, you must demonstrate how your research aligns with one or more of the following priority areas: Ocean Science and Technology.Information, Computer Science, and Technology (ICT), Clean Technology, Financial Services, Life Sciences, Aerospace & Defense, Health & Wellness, Resource Sector, Broad definition, Social Innovation

NOTE: Only master applicants are eligible.

Application Procedure

Follow the process below on how to apply for the Killam Masters-Level Awards at Dalhousie University for the 2024-25 academic session: 

  • Login: Access the FGS Scholarship Management Platform using a Dalhousie NetID or create a new account.
  • Application Creation: Start a new application or edit an existing one within the platform.
  • CGS-M Opt-In: Master’s applicants can opt-in with their CGS-M application if applicable.
  • Self-Identification: Complete the questionnaire to assist in the award review process.
  • Transcripts: Upload official transcripts directly into the scholarship portal.
  • References: Ensure all reference letters are submitted by the specified deadline.
  • Finalization: Agree to the terms and apply by clicking “Save and Finalize”.
  • Apply through the Harmonized Scholarship Process.
  • Your department will review your application and nominate you if eligible.
  • Check with your department for an internal deadline. (General deadline remains January 16, 2025)
