A Background

The International Master’s Award of Excellence was first initiated in 2019 for only master’s students looking to go fully into research-based programs at the University of Waterloo. 

The program is the University of Waterloo’s commitment to ensuring academic excellence for international master’s applicants. 

What the Scholarship Offers

The International Master’s Award of Excellence (IMAE) offers funding for master’s applicants across all international countries. Also, irrespective of your field of choice,  the International Master’s Award of Excellence (IMAE) at the University of Waterloo is for all, irrespective of your race or ethnic group.

With this scholarship, successful applicants stand to get the following:

  • The IMAE is valued at $2,500 per term, extendable to a maximum of five terms within the student’s program duration.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates: International full-time students paying international tuition fees
  • Programs: Research-based graduate programs (thesis or major research paper)
  • Entry Point: Typically awarded to students in their first term (term 1.0)
  • Academic Excellence: As determined by the Faculty’s criteria
  • Academic Progress: Consistent with program requirements and without probationary conditions
  • Additional Funding: May be combined with other scholarships; not typically awarded with foreign government/agency sponsorship or self-funding beyond Faculty support levels
  • Previous IMSA Recipients: Not eligible unless for a new master’s degree.
  •  Process: Automatic consideration upon admission application
  • Criteria: Faculty-established academic excellence and program fit
  • Faculty Discretion: Additional eligibility criteria may apply

Application Procedure

The application window opens on 1 June 2024.

  • Students are selected automatically by the Faculty/Department. Secure an admission offer from the University of Waterloo and proceed to apply for the scholarship here.
