The IWA Climate Smart Utilities Recognition Program is a global initiative that celebrates water and sanitation utilities making strides in climate action. The program recognizes those who are adapting to climate change, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and leading the way in their communities.

This recognition goes beyond an award; it’s about sharing success stories and inspiring others. Utilities from all over can apply, and if they win, they get to share their journey at a big event in Toronto. It’s a great way for them to get noticed and for others to learn from their example.

A Background

The program is built on three main ideas: adaptation, mitigation, and leadership. Utilities have to show how they’re ready for climate change, how they’re cutting down on emissions, and how they’re leading others to do the same. It’s not just for the big players; even smaller utilities from less wealthy countries have a shot at getting recognized.

Winning utilities get help with travel and conference costs so they can come to Toronto and talk about their work. It’s a big opportunity for them to connect with others and spread the word about being climate smart.

What the Scholarship Offers

The IWA Climate Smart Utilities Recognition Program offers a funded opportunity for prospective applicants as follows:

  • The goal of this initiative is to encourage utilities and other stakeholders to adopt a more climate-smart mindset and to focus on three interrelated pillars of action: mitigation, adaptation, and leadership. The program’s primary objectives are to:
  • Raise awareness through webinars, the sharing and publication of pertinent articles and research, the invitation of utilities and IWA members to exchange best practices through Climate Smart Stories, and the use of a resource-rich website.
  • Motivate action by describing the perfect Climate Smart utility as IWA has provided in the Guidance Framework. Moreover, IWA facilitates peer-to-peer communication via its website and Community of Practice gatherings.
